Co-op Community Room
Upcoming Events

In our Community Room we have a photo retrospective of the Common Market's history.

The fifth Cooperative Principle:
Education, Training and Information: Cooperatives educate and train their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can help with the development of their cooperative. They also inform the general public about the nature and benefits of cooperation.

Local farmer, Rick Hood, leads participants as they learn to build their own water-saving rain barrels.

The Common Market has designated a space in our new store to help us fulfill the fifth Co-op Principle. We call this space our Co-op Community Room. All events in the Community Room will be educational with a primary focus on cooperatives, health and sustainability.

Better Eating for Life, Step Nine: Put Protein in its Place

Free! Pre-register at our Co-op Services Desk or email zoe@commonmarket.coop

While cartoon characters can get away with eating jumbo beef servings, real people might take a more moderate approach to healthfully meet their protein needs. To get the best balance of nutrients and health benefits, the latest food guidance recommends varying your protein sources among animal and plant proteins such as lean cuts of meat, poultry, and fish, as well as beans, nuts, and seeds. Because protein is so important to our bodies, we need to eat enough of it every day. Fortunately, this is extremely easy to do, even for vegetarians. In fact, most Americans, including vegetarians, have a daily protein intake in excess of their needs.

Better Eating for Life is a guide to great nutrition developed by Mary Saucier Choate, Food and Nutrition Educator for the Co-op Food Stores in Hanover and Lebanon, NH. Pick up your guide to Step 9: Put Protein in its Place at our Co-op Services Desk and attend this workshop with Linda Pruce for more helpful tips on engaging the program.

Trans fat, tropical oils, cholesterol – eat it or not? Thinking about fats and oils can be very confusing. Fats are also part of every cell membrane in our body. They are crucial for a healthy immune system; they play a role in the regulation of inflammation, blood pressure, and blood clotting, cholesterol metabolism, and body organ insulation. They are important for the proper development of the brain, nervous system, and vision. For good health, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend specific daily intakes for unsaturated liquid oils because of their heart- and health-protective benefits.
